At SMU, Ryan played for Coach Matt Doherty (UNC 84') diring the 2008-2009 season. The Mustangs went 9-21 that year.

In High School, he was a two-time All-State first-team selection by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and two-time TAPPS Final Four All-Tournament Team member.
As a senior at SBS, he averaged 20.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.7 steals.
